They say:

“I can't think of a better way to learn. On a tiny Gulf island in the sun, far from work and traffic: drawing, learning about type, minutely scrutinizing letterforms; where they start, how they move, and creating new ones. Type Camp is fundamentally different from any class. It is a learning vacation, so instead of going home each day and dividing your focus, you just think about type. For a week. And sleep in, hike, swim, lie in the sun, and eat well. For a week. Prepare to have your perspectives delightfully altered.”

“I had such a great time. It was amazing to be around people who were interested in talking type and not glaze over at the mention of kerning and tracking. I really feel like I am on the right path now and that was 100% because of Type Camp. It was such a unique experience and I think anyone interested in type should attend and see where it takes them, they may be surprised.”

Type Camp California
San Luis Obispo
12–17 June 2011 Camp is over for this year—this camp is planned again for 2012: check back in a few months for details.

Type Camp California will help you rediscover your creativity in typography. All learning takes place over six days by means of differing and convergent approaches to letterforms and type use in discussions, lessons, and workshops. World-reknowned instructors will share their professional processes and typographic knowledge with you to help you to become a better typographer and a better designer. By day, we’ll have typography workshops and by evening, we’ll stroll through the rolling hills of California wine-country. All meals will be prepared by our beloved Chef Linda and will feature fresh local ingredients. This camp will be held at the lovely Dancing Deer Farm in Templeton outside San Luis Obispo, California. Near the coast between San Francisco and Los Angeles, the farm is approximately 3 and a half hours drive from either San Francisco or Los Angeles.

The teaching team for Type Camp California 2011 is Head of www.typographica.org and former FontShop Type Director, Stephen Coles; the genius typographic expert ‘TypeGirl’, Tiffany Wardle; founder of Type Camp and international typography instructor, Dr Shelley Gruendler; and a few area type stars just might drop in to visit.

We’ll also spend a day at the delightful Shakespeare Press Museum — a working printing house filled with historical type and presses. It’s in the heart of the California Polytechnic State University campus and demonstrates how the historical can reside with the digital.
