They say:

“I can't think of a better way to learn. On a tiny Gulf island in the sun, far from work and traffic: drawing, learning about type, minutely scrutinizing letterforms; where they start, how they move, and creating new ones. Type Camp is fundamentally different from any class. It is a learning vacation, so instead of going home each day and dividing your focus, you just think about type. For a week. And sleep in, hike, swim, lie in the sun, and eat well. For a week. Prepare to have your perspectives delightfully altered.”

“I had such a great time. It was amazing to be around people who were interested in talking type and not glaze over at the mention of kerning and tracking. I really feel like I am on the right path now and that was 100% because of Type Camp. It was such a unique experience and I think anyone interested in type should attend and see where it takes them, they may be surprised.”

Type Camp India 2011

Type Camp India
15–22 December 2012

Type Camp India is an educational and professional training event that will strengthen your understanding of typography within a cultural context. We dedicate seven full days in the heart of this international city to discussions, projects, visits, talks, and workshops, that are all focused on typography.

This camp will provide you with an opportunity to investigate the cultural context of typography while experiencing one of the most intriguing cultures in the world.

Every morning is a studio focusing on Tamil typography and design and every afternoon is a cultural workshop where you’ll visit local publishing houses, meet and work with street typographers, visit nearby ancient and modern Hindu temples, hold type walks in local markets, learn Tamil Calligraphy, visit a historic Urdu handwritten newspaper, and spend an entire day experimenting with screenprinting.

You will enjoy custom-prepared Tamil meals featuring fresh local ingredients everyday for lunch and you will taste the wonders of the diverse Chennai cuisine as a local in the evenings. We’ll enjoy a traditional Tamil welcome feast on our first evening and a farewell Indian brunch on our last morning.

The teaching team for Type Camp Chennai 2012 is Art Director for India’s Tara Books and Head of Design & Interaction at Central St Martins in London, Dr Rathna Ramanathan; award-winning printer for Tara Books Mr Arumugam (but everyone calls him ‘Mr. A’), and Type Camp founder and international typography educator and writer, Dr Shelley Gruendler; all of whom will help you expand your international typographic knowledge for today’s multicultural world.

Cost: $2790
