TYPE CAMP GALIANO 07 | GALIANO 08 | INDIA 09
Shelley Gruendler is one of those rare individuals with a PhD in Typography (from the famed Typography Department at Reading University). But more importantly, she is a brilliant, inspiring teacher with a knack for making avid type hounds out of beginner and advanced students who cross her path. Her Doctoral thesis was on the life and work of Beatrice Warde (notably, the author of the “Crystal Goblet” concept of typography), and she brings a wealth of historical and practical knowledge to her teaching. But be forewarned, Shelley’s approach is surprising, amusing and full of her North Carolina verve: no stuffy type teacher, this. Behind her teaching experience in Canada, the US, and the UK, she has also worked as a designer and typographer in the aforementioned countries plus Italy, has lectured internationally on historic and contemporary typographic issues, and has organized and managed conferences on both type and design in three countries. Be prepared to be delighted.
